'Fergie was right about Pogba': Debunking biggest myth about Paul Pogba in 60 seconds
Sir Alex was indeed left furious when Pogba joined Juventus in 2012 as he never wanted the midfielder to quit United.
"Fergie was right about Pogba": you can often hear this from Man United fans after Paul Pogba's yet another attempt to force his exit from Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson, however, never wanted to part company with the Frenchman in the first place.
Instead, the legendary Scot was left furious when Pogba joined Juventus for less than £1m in 2012 and there's only one man who's responsible for that move - the player's agent Mino Raiola or a "s***bag" in Sir Alex's own words.
“There are one or two football agents I simply do not like,” Ferguson wrote in his 2015 book, Leading. “And Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba’s agent, is one of them.
“I distrusted him from the moment I met him. He became Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s agent while he was playing for Ajax, and eventually, he would end up representing Pogba, who was only 18 years old at the time.
“We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign. But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco.
“He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus.”
What's more, Patrice Evra once revealed Ferguson even asked him to convince his fellow Frenchman not to leave the Red Devils.
“La Pioche [Pogba] is like a son to me,” Evra told La Repubblica. “Ferguson sent me to his house to convince him to stay. He cried, he couldn’t sleep. He knew he could become greater than Vieira, but he had decided.
“Ferguson also knew Pogba could become very strong, but he couldn’t force the issue.”
Sir Alex was eventually pleased with Pogba's departure but it was rather due to the way Paul left Old Trafford.
“Pogba signed for Juventus a long time ago as far as we’re aware,” Ferguson said after the Frenchman's move to Turin. “It’s a bit disappointing because I don’t think he showed us any respect at all. To be honest, if they carry on that way, I’m quite happy that he’s away, from me, anyway.”
The France international rejoined the Red Devils in a £94.5m move in 2016 but made his desire to leave the club public last summer.
Even though he ended up staying at Old Trafford for the current season, he's still keen on leaving the Theatre of Dreams with Real Madrid and Juve among the likeliest destinations (The Guardian).
