Pele: 'Pele was the best because they compare the likes of Messi and Ronaldo to me'
Pele reckons Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player right now, as he is the 'most consistent'.
However, he adds that Messi also shouldn't be forgotten.
It difficult for the Brazilian to say who is the best in history but he names himself anyway.
Lionel Messi might be nearing Pele's all-time goal record but this won't get him the recognition of the Brazilian's football legend.
"Today, I think Cristiano Ronaldo is the best, he's the most consistent. But you can't forget Messi, of course," said Pele in the interview with an unnamed Youtube channel as cited by A Bola.
“The best player in the history of football? It is a difficult question to answer. One cannot forget Zico, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo. In Europe, players like Beckenbauer, Cruyff.
"Now, it's not my fault: I think Pele was better than them. Why? Because everyone compares them to me.”
Currently, Messi has 627 goals scored for Blaugrana, which is actually the second-best record of all time. Only Pele with 643 goals for Santos has more, meaning Leo has to score 17 more goals to beat the Brazilian legend to yet another impressive achievement.
You should keep in mind that this includes only goals in official games. A big chunk of Pele's career goals came in friendlies.
