3 Reasons why Liverpool should be handed the Title Now
- The Reds are 25 points ahead at the top of the league with nine games to go.
- Coronavirus outbreak doesn't seem to end soon.
- FA's dedicated decision to end the 2019-20 season at all costs might backfire.
The
world is undergoing a real rut, with Coronavirus spreading like
anything and events of all types closing down at the rate of knots.
Until the start of last week, the FA had Premier League games suspended until the 3rd of April.
However,
couple of days back, new reports have emerged that the English Football
Governing body has extended the suspension until at least 30th April
and vowed to finish the 2019-20 season, whenever possible.
Now,
while that is good news for football clubs, especially the ones who are
in the relegation zone and fighting for Champions League places, there
is a massive chance that football doesn't return in the next three to
four months at the least.
That
in turn means leaders Liverpool, who are 25 points ahead of everyone
else, have to wait a bit more for their first league title in 30 years.
However, here are the three reasons why the Reds should be handed the title now:
Unprecedented lead and No Challengers
As
mentioned above, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are 25 points ahead at the
top of the league after 29 games in the league. No team in English
football history has this big a lead at the top after these many games.
Even if second-placed Manchester City
win their game in hand, the gap would be 22 points with nine games to
play. This effectively means that the Reds can lose seven of their last
nine games and still win the title. Funny that!
With
uncertain times and no guarantee of the timeframe of resumption of
football in the near-future, it would only be sensible that Liverpool
are handed the title.
Liverpool team showing no weakness
Despite
the fact that the Reds bowed out of the Champions League and lost a
league game three weeks back, they have been close to perfect in the
league this season.
Klopp's
men have 82 in 29 games, with no signs of slowing down. Even the
record-breaking Manchester City team had 78 from that amount of games in
the 2017/18 season.
If that doesn't paint a picture of the overwhelming dominance, nothing will.
No clear picture of the Virus subsiding
While
it was bold from the FA to put down a marker and dedicate their
interest in completing the season as and when football resumes post this
pandemic, the current situation of the world doesn't give a clear
picture of the future.
If
medical experts are to be believed, the peak of the Coronavirus is yet
to arrive in England, and it may do so by the second week of April.
If
that is true, it would virtually mean that the country's authorities
may continue to stop the resumption of the game for the next three to
four months (we are talking August/September here).
So, by that time, the idea should be to play the more important games and leave the dead rubbers out of the way.
Maybe, hand Liverpool the title and conduct playoff games to decide Champions League and relegation spots.
Conclusion
To
wrap this off, we are living in very strange times with some anomalous
things taking place across the world. The future is uncertain,
especially in England with the peak of the virus yet to arrive.
Keeping
all those things in mind, it would be right to conclude that the FA
must think of shortening the amount of games if and when the season
resumes, chiefly because the next season doesn't get hindered in an
irreplaceable manner.
Handing Liverpool their deserved league title helps!
